Tarot Movie Review By An Actual Tarot Reader Recently, I “braved” watching the 2024 movie Tarot. Although I have no affinity for horror genres, my admiration for the tarot piqued my interest. As a professional card reader, and the author of four award-winning books featuring tarot wisdom, I spent the majority of the 90-minute movie shaking my head at the misinformation portrayed by the (frankly silly) movie. My guess is that some people who watched the flick might wonder if the concepts raised by the storyline were correct. If so, this blog is for you. Let me address some of the fallacies and ease your mind about tarot cards. At the beginning of the movie, the characters find a tarot deck and decide to deal and interpret the cards. One member of the group bloviates that it is a dangerous practice to handle a deck that belonged to someone else. My response to that: “Give me a break.” A tarot deck consists of 78 card-stock pieces of paper with pictures on it. Today’s playing cards were derived from the tarot deck. What do you think those four suites depict? Hearts stand for love, diamonds speak of stewardship and wealth, clubs represent health and energy, and spades, or “swords” in tarot, symbolize the need to make difficult decisions. Ever hear “call a spade a spade?” Because playing cards ARE tarot cards, and many people casually toss around decks to play games like gin rummy, poker and go fish, it stands to reason that handling cards is safe practice. I’ve never heard of anyone catching on fire or summoning evil spirits in the middle of a bridge game. Also, the setting for Tarot is a Scooby-doo style haunted mansion. Therefore, the horror aspect is more the fault of Airbnbs than tarot. Let’s be clear—the goal of the movie was to provide a few minutes of adrenaline rush at the expense of tarot cards. The movie claims that tarot cards are powerful…this is true! Their messages support tried-and-true practices of discipline, responsibility and strength. Applying this wisdom can result in healthier relationships, more lucrative employment and a more stable lifestyle.
